The Best Albums of 2025
It’s time for my favorite annual tradition - the roundup of my picks for the best albums of the year. I’m doing 25 for 2025 - a top 10 and then 15 more that I also really liked.
2025 was an incredible year for music, leaving me with many new life-long favorites that I’ll return to for years to come. In an era of life where I feel like I’m either constantly glued to a screen or getting caught up in the perpetual “need to always be working to make money” mindset imposed on me by late-stage capitalism, music continues to be my dearest friend, always there when I need some respite from the chaos. Hearing interesting new music from friends, existing heroes, and new (to me) artists reminds me that there is still so much beauty and connection in a world that often feels devoid of genuine expression.
This was also a huge musical year for me personally. I released SO THIS IS LIVING with Barbara and i’m not a perfect person, but i’m trying to make you proud with Specific Ocean. I also recorded my debut jazz album as a bandleader with my quartet performing all my original compositions. The resulting album, I Grew Up, comes out on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 with a celebratory performance at Dazzle in Denver on March 5. I’m very proud of all of this music and infinitely grateful to the people I get to play and collaborate with on a regular basis.
Anyway, back to the reason we’re all here. This year, I spent the last month contemplating my favorite albums and deciding whether to even rank them at all, with the top 10 shifting positions nearly daily. Ultimately, I had 4 first place winners that I couldn’t bring myself to separate, listed first alphabetically below. The following 6 are ranked, but just know that no matter that “final” ranking, these amazing works are all cherished parts of my musical collection.
As a reminder, the best way to support musicians you enjoy is by buying their music, merch, and going to see them live. There’s nothing I love more than holding the physical vinyl copy of an album I love and reading the lyrics and seeing the art up close, or putting on my favorite hat or crewneck sweatshirt from a band I was lucky enough to see live. I will link all the Bandcamp links for the albums/artists below, so if you love something, please consider purchasing it!
I do have a playlist available through Tidal to listen to here, but want to urge you to buy the things you love. Also, if you’re still using Spotify, you should seriously consider switching to something that doesn’t support ICE or fund AI weapons (among many other things).
Alright, thanks for reading. Here are my favorite albums of 2025.
1. Clifford - Golden Caravan
Release Date: July 25, 2025
Purchase
Favorite Tracks:
C Song
Dearest One
Trackstarr
Clifford’s 2025 release is a no-skip album with so many interesting musical moments that I still find myself noticing new elements on each listen. Golden Caravan has thoughtful lyricism, textural surprises, incredible vocal delivery, and a diversity of musical ideas that make it an engaging listen with a genre that’s hard to solidly pin down but still completely unified and cohesive.
1. Hannah Cohen - Earthstar Mountain
Release Date: March 28, 2025
Purchase
Favorite Tracks:
Earthstar
Draggin’
Summer Sweat
When I first heard Earthstar, the album’s first single, I was completely blown away by the subtle surprising harmonic moments and super sweet melody, and I knew this album would become a favorite. Hannah Cohen’s Earthstar Mountain is a gorgeous listen all the way through. The lyrics, delivered by Cohen’s distinctive timbral voice, are poetic yet still relatable and are complemented so beautifully by lush arrangements and solid musicality.
I was lucky enough to hear “Draggin’” live at Brooklyn Steel when Sam Evian opened for Grizzly Bear in October (best b-day ever) and am looking forward to seeing her full set at Treefort in March.
1. Packaging - Packaging
Release Date: October 10, 2025
Purchase
Favorite Tracks:
In Your Pocket
Didn’t Wanna Stay
Water’s Edge
Packaging’s debut release is everything I want in an album. The songwriting is full of exciting unexpected moments whether through interesting harmonic shifts, playing with form, or metric surprises. The melodies are memorable and singable without being predictable or boring and delivered with uniqueness and clarity by singer/guitarist Daniel Lyon. The use of different synth textures and other production elements creates immersive environments for each song that totally draw me in as a listener.
Barbara was lucky enough to play a couple shows with Packinging on their Fall tour. I’m so grateful for the friendships we have with them and can’t wait to see what they do next.
1. Way Dynamic - Massive Shoe
Release Date: August 22, 2025
Purchase
Favorite Tracks:
Ibiza
I Was The Dancer
People Settle Down
Massive Shoe is a collection of songs that I can’t get enough of. Dylan Young, hailing from Melbourne, Australia, writes songs with clever lyricism and solid grooves that evoke a feeling of nostalgia. This album is tender and playful, and sounds so genuine. While there is a simplicity to the instrumentation and song forms, there are so many moments of harmonic surprises and lyrical interest that make me continue to listen again and again. Moments evocative of my favorites Beatles guitar tones and other influences from that era appear throughout the album, the familiarity of those elements complementing Way Dynamic’s distinctive songwriting and production style.
5. Melody’s Echo Chamber - Unclouded
Release Date: December 5, 2025
Purchase
Favorite Tracks:
Daisy
Eyes Closed
Childhood Dream
Melody Prochet does it again - I’ve always loved everything she has released, and this album is no different. Unclouded is a dreamy album, complete with shimmering guitar hooks, incredible drumming, and Prochet’s signature high register vocals soaring atop it all.
6. Men I Trust - Equus Asinus
Release Date: March 19, 2025
Purchase
Favorite Tracks:
I Come With Mud
Moon 2
Frost Bite
Men I Trust put out two albums this year - Equus Asinus and Equus Caballus. While I enjoyed both, the one that really stuck with me was the former - showcasing the more acoustic side of the band. As usual, Men I Trust creates soundscapes that are totally immersive and moody. I love the more repetitive moments on this album, where sections last longer than expected, allowing me to sink into the comforting grooves and be lulled into the character of each song.
7. Unknown Mortal Orchestra - CURSE
Release Date: June 18, 2025
Purchase
Favorite Tracks:
DEATH COMES FROM THE SKY
BOYS WITH THE CHARACTERISTICS OF WOLVES
ONE HUNDRED BATS
I don’t usually include EPs on my list, but couldn’t ignore this incredible release from Unknown Mortal Orchestra this year. CURSE sounds like 2011-2013 UMO and boy do I love it. Each song is packed with signature UMO grooves and guitar riffs. Ruban Nielson’s distinctive voice and laid back delivery perfectly lock in with each track.
8. Choses Sauvages - Choses Sauvages III
Release Date: March 28, 2025
Purchase
Favorite Tracks:
Fixe
Faux départ
Chaos initial
Unrelenting bass lines lay the foundation for Choses Sauvages to create layered grooves with continuous building elements on this high-energy album. So many different textures appear throughout each song that make it a consistently interesting listen that’s impossible not to move along with.
9. Juana Molina - DOGA
Release Date: November 5, 2025
Purchase
Favorite Tracks:
la paradoja
siestas ahí
caravanas
Coming from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Juana Molina is one of the most unique and inspiring contemporary musical voices in the world. Her distinctive vocal tone and use of unconventional loops and sonic textures makes DOGA one of the best albums of 2025.
10. Forth Wanderers - The Longer This Goes On
Release Date: July 18, 2025
Purchase
Favorite Tracks:
Call You Back
Springboard
To Know Me/To Love Me
Forth Wanderers’ The Longer This Goes On features interesting chord progressions and song forms with fuzzed out textures, all complimented by Ava Trilling’s unique vocal quality. There are fun surprises throughout the album, like the transition to a swing feel at the end of “Call You Back”. The newest artist to me on my top 10 list, I can’t wait to see what’s next from them.
There you have it, the top 10! Here are 15 more albums I really liked this year - these ones are coming at you alphabetically by artist.
